Brake Lights is a small, 8x10 Acrylic painting of my driveway. I put a one gallon jug of cleaner on the brake in my car and painted outside during a winter night in January, trying to quickly paint the scene. This is part of a series titled Dark Days, which sought to utilize elements of my neighborhood and what I considered nostalgic and home-like landscapes at night. It was partially to deal with the fact that I'd be moving away to Greensboro shortly after making these.
I paint in acrylic predominantly with Golden Acrylics, however I also utilize Liquitex, and even Liquitex Basics for underpaintings. For this particular series, I always start with a black gesso'd canvas, preferring to work reductively and only add lights, rather than darks. For this specific piece, the canvas was already a cut of black unstretched canvas.
Brake Lights has been showcased in a Holiday Art Market in CPCC's Ross Gallery and it has also been showcased at Legion Brewing in 2019.
