This is a 40 Stroke self portrait in oil. It was created immediately after the atrocity you can see on the right. I was so demotivated that I skipped class, and refused to come in, painting the above portrait instead, because my homework was such an embarassing, gross mess.
For those who don't know, a 40 stroke painting is a painting where your brush can only touch and leave the canvas 40 times. I believe I gave up on the one on the right at around 35, but this painting utilizes somewhere between 34 and 37 strokes. The secret is to carefully choose your brushes for coverage, and apply a LOT of paint. Both of these paintings utilize an orange acrylic coat as their base, which I felt was a really great color to use for creating luminous, warm tones.
