Ursa Major was designed from a series of stream of consciousness drawings. To be specific, the original drawing came from doodling while I was cooking with my girlfriend, I'd draw in-between tasks and continued to draw throughout the night. She was drawn on a small 6"x8" softbound sketchbook with a bic pen, scribbles and markings culminating into the dark and light brown line work seen in the current iteration of the piece. From there, I began scanning my drawings and editing them digitally, painting in textures, creating weathering, and utilizing geometric shapes, overlays, and transparencies to create the image.
She is a representation of strength, meant to exemplify inner resilience. She draws from shamanistic influences, and from cosmic energy. She is the constellation Ursa Major, known as the Mother Bear and also more commonly known as the Big Dipper. She represents the innate connection we all share with eachother, and moreover, she is meant to be an empowering symbol of feminine energy. As grounded and firm as the mountains beneath and around her.
She can currently be found on Etsy, while copies of her remain, here. She is a limited print, and I have already sold many copies of her, but I will stop at 100, minus an Artist Print. Get her while she's available! You can also purchase a special one at CVA currently, which is unmarked, and will not be a part of this set. She is also available at markets until she's sold out!
This piece is currently on view at the Center for Visual Artists in Greensboro NC until March 28th for the show "Self Recognition Through the Other". You can find a blog post about it here
Ursa Major has also been published in the Coraddi Magazine, Spring Issue of 2019 which you can view here
